The winner of the Africa Electrification Initiative (AEI) Call for Papers competition last year tells the story of a successful public private partnership (PPP) in Guinea that allows cash-strapped villagers in a remote part of the country to barter their agricultural produce in exchange for electricity.
The World Bank has supported the Guinea government's attempts to increase electricity access to remote rural areas and was encouraged by the innovative payment model to ensure a higher installation and repayment rate than in other parts of the country.
