John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911) - Mowgli Leaping Off the Cliff (c1907)

Vintage photo of a terracotta bas-relief by John Lockwood Kipling, father of Rudyard. I believe the original is in Kipling's former home, Bateman's.

Anyone who hasn't read the story can be forgiven for being confused by this picture. In the story "Red Dog" Mowgli's wolf pack is threatened by an overwhelming pack of wild dogs. Mowgli lures the dogs over a river cliff that's covered in beehives, after smearing himself in garlic so he won't be stung. Some of the dogs are stung to death, some drown in the fast-flowing river, some are stabbed to death by Mowgli, and once the survivors come ashore they have to fight a bloody battle with Mowgli and the wolves.

Somehow I can't see Disney filming that scene, can you?
