De Witte - Church Interior
Interior of the Oude Kerk, Delft, 1650 by Emanuel De Witte. So strange as to seem like one of my collages. The interesting thing is that this is NOT an unusual picture in this genre. The scene is quite normal to everyday life at the time and similar pictures exist with dogs running freely in the church. Behind the boys scribbling on the column is an open grave. The marble slabs were lifted and graves dug beneath. I assume there was NO basement. The beauty of the architecture disguises the message: life's transitory nature -- even crudely put amidst the glory and light.
