bunker mentality....

Finally in 1941,after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the US entered World War 2. The US had largely stayed on the sidelines during the first 5 years of the conflict employing what some may call a "bunker mentality",basically trying to stay out of the conflict and taking on somewhat of an isolationist stance. But once they entered the war, they quickly ramped up their War machine.

The Green River Munitions Plant in Northern Illinois was one of many built quickly to supply ammunition and other armaments for the War. At its height, it employed over 4000 workers. Flamethrowers were developed and manufactured pretty much exclusively at Green River. When the war ended, the plant was closed just as quickly in 1945. Many of the different plant sites were dismantled or sold off,and today little remains. But looking at these old reinforced bunkers can still bring back memories of another time, when Americans mobilized and helped save the world...
