A round,or in this case octagonal barn, was a pretty special thing back in the days of barn building.Not only were they unique,but the round structure worked well for certain farms;for instance milking cows in a round barn was easier because you could move the cows through faster and easier.Most round barns had a central silo to make feeding easier as well.But round barns were hard to build as well as more expensive...

 

I've came across many round barns in my travels,and their condition varies widely.They are not cheap to maintain and/or restore.This fine example,southeast of Paw Paw,IL.,has underwent an extensive but tasteful renovation that insures its existencefor decades to come.
