fort zach
Fort Zachary Taylor,or Fort Zach as the locals refer to it, was completed in 1845 as the US protective outpost for the Gulf of Mexico. It was under Union control during the Civil War,which prompted Union soldiers to tell Southern leaning locals they would have to "head north" to join the Confederacy. It played an important role in the Spanish-American War and was revamped in 1898 to better serve during that war,and WW I and II.It was decommissioned in 1945 and is now part of a state park.It is listed on the National Register for Historic Places.
