Box Cat

On this particular day, I was riding on the bus with Jason Eames as he drove Route 2 up and down Nebraska Avenue during the morning peak, as it was a much better alternative to being stuck outside in Tropical Storm Debby. As we passed near the area of the Tampa Greyhound Track, this little guy ran across the street right in front of the bus. Jason saw it immediately and avoided it. I only caught it out of the corner of my eye and thought it was a piece of cardboard blowing by. On the next trip, we saw the cat still sitting on the side of the road, but weren't sure if it was alive. Jason still had to several more runs on the 2, so it wasn't until a few hours later when we were able to come back up and see if this cat was still alive. Thankfully he was, but he was also obviously cold and frightened. After wrapping him up in a spare t-shirt I had and picking off all the ants that were crawling on him, he started to warm up to us, becoming quite the talkative cat. We tried taking him to the Humane Society of Tampa, but they were unable to take him. They suggested that we take him to Hillsborough County Animal Services, so that's where we went next. The Human Society gave us a cardboard animal carrier to hold him in. On the drive to Animal Services, the cat, or Box Cat as we started calling him, ended up falling asleep, obviously tuckered out from his eventful day. Though Animal Services were closed on that day, an employee who arrived at the building shortly after we did was able to take him in for us. Presumably, a loving family ended up adopting him and hopefully Box Cat is now happy and warm.
