Pirunpesä (Devil’s Hole) - a preglacially weathered hollow in Jalasjärvi
The possible factors that have contributed to the formation of a bedrock hollow as the result of preglacial weathering are discussed in the study. The prime reasons are the combination of perpendicular jointing, both horizontal and vertical, of the porphyric granite bedrock together with its affinity to weathering. The weathered hollow, almost 20 meters deep is a relict of a weathering crust formed during preglacial times. Both old weathering products and soil formations have been preserved from glacial erosion in various parts of the study area. Hirvas, H., Lahti, S.J., Niemelä, J., 1982. Pirunpesä - preglasiaalinen rapautuma Jalasjärvellä. Geologi N:o 4, 61 - 64.
Made from lidar point cloud. Color Shaded TIN, Contours (interval 1 m) and Points Over Background.
Geologist Satu Hietala (GTK) tells about Devil’s Hole of Jalasjärvi
