Lorain MC 540
Lorain fitting new engine
Fitting a reconditioned Perkins P6 into an ex Walter Woolfenden Lorain MC 3 at Douglas railway Station yard. To save stripping all the body off the rear of the crane, the side panel was removed and the engine was suspended on a railway line with a very long length projecting. The railway line was lifted by my 1902 Taylor and Hubbard steam crane attached as close to the crane body as possible with a single rail lifting clamp, and so acting as a fulcrum, and because of the leverage, 3 men pulling down on the end of the railway line were easily able to lift the engine off its beds. The old engine was removed and the new one fitted by this method.
