Jenipapo é o fruto do jenipapeiro (Genipa americana), uma árvore que chega a vinte metros de altura e é da família Rubiaceae. É encontrada em toda a América tropical. No Brasil, encontramos pés de jenipapo nativos na Amazônia e na mata atlântica, principalmente em matas mais úmidas, ou próximo a rios - a planta inclusive aguenta encharcamento. Em guarani, jenipapo significa "fruta que serve para pintar". Isso porque, do sumo do fruto verde, se extrai uma tinta com a qual se pode pintar a pele, paredes, cerâmica etc. O jenipapo é usado por muitas etnias da América do Sul como pintura corporal e some depois de aproximadamente duas semanas.1 A bela coloração azul-escura formada deve-se ao contacto da genipina contida nos frutos verdes com as proteínas da pele, sob ação do oxigênio atmosférico.

Jenipapo is the fruit of jenipapeiro (American Genipa), a tree that reaches twenty feet tall and is of the family Rubiaceae. It is found throughout tropical America. In Brazil, we find jenipapo feet of native Amazonia and the Atlantic forest, especially in more humid forests, or near rivers - including the plant stand waterlogging. In Guarani, jenipapo means "fruit that serves to paint". This is because the green juice of the fruit extracted with an ink which can dye the skin, walls, tile, etc. Genipap is used by many ethnic groups in South America as some body painting and after about two weeks. The beautiful dark blue color formed is due to the contact of genipin contained in green fruit with skin proteins, under the action of atmospheric oxygen.
