django unchained review

here's my review of Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino's newest action western film set in the 1800s.

i thought this was a very good movie, but i felt it had a few cons. the writing and dialogue (as always in Tarantino's work) was brilliant and very well written. the film did a very good job holding up its plot and kept me interested throughout the whole thing. the gore and blood content was well - unchained.

Jamie Foxx- Django

Jamie Foxx made an excellent performance as Django. upon seeing the trailer i thought he seemed like the typical gritty gunslinger person that's very cliche'd in westerns, but Foxx was very different. he made the role his own. we see his life as a slave in the first 5 minutes of the film, where he and four other slaves are walking behind two men on horses for days on end. after Christoph Waltz buys him, he is discriminated and called very racist slurs- something this film is not afraid to expose. we see his character get through situations, learning by Christoph Waltz's ways. Django is also very sly and handy with a gun, which is demonstrated throughout the film.

Tarantino's writing and style give his character a good spark. i'd give his role an 8/ 10.

Christoph Waltz -Dr. King Schultz

i haven't seen many of Christoph waltz's films, probably the one i can most familiarly note is the green hornet (SUCKED). but he gave a very good performance as Dr. King Schultz, who is a smart, surprisingly violent con man who is very good at outsmarting and... well... brutally murdering anybody that gets in his way. Christoph Waltz is especially good in this film because whenever he is getting the better of somebody, he uses a small, weak looking persona that makes his real personality a big surprise, as shown in the beginning of the film. and again, Tarantino's writing amplified his role quite a bit. 8/10

Leonardo Dicaprio- Calvin Candie

i think Leo Dicaprio did an outstanding job as a brutally violent and racist plantation owner called Calvin Candie. one moment he is a friendly person who is suave and charming, but the next moment he is screaming, killing, and causing the deaths of people with glee. he is a very interesting character who is sometimes Likeable but spends a lot of the running time killing and threatening people. and still... why the hasn't Leo Dicaprio gotten an Oscar yet? he is a great actor who has performed outstanding roles in cinema. WTF? 9/10

plot/story

this film has kind of a typical plot, but i liked it. it's your typical vengeance story about a man trying to get his wife back, but throughout the story it turned into a more interesting plot device. i liked it. 6.5/10

on another note, i wasn't very happy with the excessive use of racial slurs. i do understand they were the norm back then, but i just don't like hearing it used to the point they did :P but i did find it funny that in a film that takes place in 1868 Samuel L. Jackson can still say "Django! Imma catch yo black ass!" plus many "mothafucka's." XD

overall i'd give the film a 9.5/10. \

also, leave your thoughts! what did you think of Django Unchained?
