Architecture of Kaluga
Kaluga is a city in the European part of Russia, in the Central Federal District. It is located on the banks of the Oka River and its tributaries—the Yachenka, Kaluzhka, and Kiyevka—160 km southwest of central Moscow.
To this day, the origin and date of Kaluga's founding remain a subject of debate among scholars and researchers. The official date of the city's founding is considered to be 1371, the year of the first written mention of Kaluga in surviving sources. The city existed for some as yet unknown period before 1371. Even the first historians of Kaluga noted that the city was much older than its official age. This is confirmed by archaeological excavations at ancient settlement sites in what is now Kaluga. In 2021, Kaluga celebrated its 650th anniversary.
