The Istra River in the city of Istra, next to the New Jerusalem Monastery ... Below, on the left, is an unbroken bridge, this is a place for swimming on the holiday - Epiphany (in winter). Anyone can swim here at any time.

Istra originates in the Moscow region and in it ends its existence, flowing into the Moscow River. The channel writes complex loops, as if it were not a flat, but a mountain river. This configuration was determined by the hilly landscape. In the upper reaches, the river is connected by the Ekaterininsky Canal with Senezhsky Lake. The length of Istra is only 113 km. It flows into the Moscow River near Zvenigorod.

The width of the river varies from 17 to 30 m. The speed of the current is low. The bottom is sandy. The average water flow is about 12 cubic meters per second. Since Istria is mainly fed by snow, in April the flow increases almost five times. The river has nine small tributaries, including Malaya Istra, Ramenka, Belyan and others.

Istra is a river with experience. It was mentioned in chronicles as early as 1461! In the 16th century it was called Bolshaya Istra. The similarity with Lithuanian and Latvian geographical names allows us to conclude that the name appeared a very long time ago, when the lands of the present western suburbs were inhabited by Baltic tribes. At the beginning of the 19th century, Istra was part of the waterway that ran along the Volga and ended at the Moscow River.
