Trinity Sergius Lavra
Happy Orthodox Christmas!
In Russia, the Orthodox Church uses the Julian calendar, and therefore Christmas this year is celebrated on the night of Wednesday 6 January 2021 to Thursday 7 January 2021.
Christmas is a holiday with a long history, but it was not always celebrated at the time we are accustomed to. Until 1918, Russia celebrated together with most of the countries of Europe on December 25, a week before the New Year. With the transition to modern chronology, the holiday began to be celebrated in January. Due to the fact that the Gregorian calendar in our country was adopted much later than in other countries, a gap of 14 days was formed in the celebration. Since 1929, it was forbidden to celebrate the Nativity of Christ in Soviet Russia. The tradition of official celebration of Christmas at the state level has been revived. in 1991.

After several years of lonely asceticism of the Monk Sergius, new inhabitants came to Makovets, and the hermitage turned into a special monastery. Some historians believe that this happened in the early 1340s, and more precisely in 1342.
Numerous architectural structures of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra were built by the best architects of the country in the 15th-19th centuries.
