Holiday Homecoming

20" x 30", Acrylic on Canvas, 2006

John Jeppesen Collection

It's December 1950, a simpler time when passenger trains were a practical way to travel and railroad depots played a major part in small town and rural life. Northern Pacific Railway’s Duluth-St Paul No. 61, pulled by a Q-3 class 4-6-2, has paused at Rush City, Minnesota depot. A young high school teacher, his wife and child have just stepped off the train to visit his parents for the holidays. After a quick welcome from his father, all will seek the warmth of the 1946 Ford station wagon for the drive home where his mother is preparing dinner. There will be a white Christmas this year, and for this family all is right with the world.
