Neural Stem Cells in 3-D Culture Models
Scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) determined the anti-tumor effects of neural stem cells in 3-D culture models. Stem cell aggregates, or spheroids (blue), were placed next to brain cancer cell spheroids. Fluorescent images captured over seven days showed that the stem cell therapy decreased the volume of cancer spheroids. The researchers, who were funded in part by the Clinical and Translational Science Awards Program, are working to advance the therapy towards first-in-human clinical trials.
