4Clay Arthur Joseph Clay - NEWBOROUGH (ALL SAINTS) CHURCHYARD

Rank:Major

Cause of Death Pneumonia

Date of Death:18/02/1915 - Age:43

North Staffordshire Regiment 2nd/6th Bn.

Arthur was educated at Harrow and went on to New College. He matriculated from New College on October 11, 1889, aged 19. He achieved fourth class honours in Jurisprudence in 1892, and had a BA and MA conferred on him on June 18, 1896.

He was a JP for Staffordshire in 1904, but evidently did not appear on the Bench very frequently. He was a director of Bass, Ratcliff & Gretton, the Burton-based brewers.

He was one of the promoters of the Ryknield Motor Company Limited, in Burton, a syndicate whose building works at Shobnall were later taken over by Baguley Cars. In 1905, Arthur took part in the first ever Isle of Man Tourist Trophy race.

Arthur inherited Hollybush on his father's death in 1910, but sold it to the Hignets, as he was by then living at Grangewood, near Overseal.

He joined the Burton Volunteers and served for many years under Lord Burton, retiring with the rank of captain. When the war came in 1914, Arthur was given a commission in the 6th Reserve North Staffordshire Regiment with the rank of Major, with command of 'A' Company.

He was involved with trench excavations, practised at Shobnall.

He did not serve overseas but he died while on active service, of pneumonia, less than six months later, on February 18, 1915, in Harpendon, Herts, at the age of 44.

At his service the wishes of the family were that his should not be a military funeral and Arthur's headstone is not one provided by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as is usually the custom. - Grave Reference: South of Church.
