When plans to build a pipeline from the Alberta oilsands to the Texas Gulf Coast -- across the Ogalala plains in the American midwest -- hit a snag of protest from farmers, ranchers, environmentalists and not just a few U.S. politicians, the Harper government of Canada quickly changed gears and began pushing an all-Canadian alternative, called the Northern Gateway pipeline which would run from Alberta to tidewater on the BC coast.
The planned terminus, at the small village of Kitimat, is located on the eastern end of a long, narrow fjord and smells every bit like the makings of a Canadian "Exxon Valdez" disaster waiting to happen ... and, thus, has understandably met with considerable resistance from locals in BC.
Notwithstanding the opposition, Harper has a working majority in Commons -- thanks to last May's election -- and has proposed new legislation that would limit lawsuits, opposition testimony, and court injunctions that would delay construction of the line...
I saw several signs like this opposing the line.
