Lab Partners

Lab Bench Still Life.

This shot appears exactly as I found it.

Labs accumulate little familiars and totems with both official and unofficial duties. One lab I know (and which shall remain nameless) passes around the "fish of shame": a plastic fish given to someone when he or she breaks a piece of equipment or does something equally boneheaded. The rule is that the fish must be prominently displayed on the bench and must remain with the unfortunate recipient until someone else does something bad deserving of special notice.

More often the role of lab familiars is not to humiliate but to amuse or encourage. The guys above are clearly enjoying the view from their (glove) box seats and rooting for the people in this bay. My first grad student acquired a little mechanical cowboy for the lab who alternated between crawling on his elbows and knees and shooting a lever-action Winchester. At some point he was dubbed M.R. Nutty and in our first three papers he is gratefully acknowledged for "helpful discussions".
