Dec. 1962 Freeze. At the nursery the temperature dropped to 32 degrees at 8:00 PM on Tuesday and didn't go above 32 until Friday afternoon. We turned on the sprinklers Tuesday at 8:00 PM and they ran until Sunday afternoon when all the ice had melted. This was a record breaking cold spell that has not happened again. By running sprinklers and continually freezing more ice the temperature will not go below 32 degrees inside the ice, saving the plant from damage or death. The problem with this system is limb breakage on plants that can not be laid down. The lowest temperature we had at the nursery was 17 degrees.
