Dart Turn

On the 7th December 2018 the tug 'Hauley VI' leaves Dartmouth with the float ferry to Kingswear. The tug swings on departure so always faces bow first for the short crossing. This operational arrangement is unique in the British Isles. The foot ferry 'Western Lady VII' is alongside at Kingswear.

 

This unique tug and float ferry service is operated by South Hams Council. The service has operated in this form since 1867 but was nearly lost in 1925 when the Great Western Railway, which owned the rights to the ferry service, closed the route to protect the revenue of its own service. After months of chaos the lease was given to the Council and in 1929 more powerful tugs were brought and the service has continued in the same form since then. Info from:
