The End is Nigh
On the 3rd October 2018 the 'James Newman' (1963) is seen at Woolwich about to make the crossing to North Woolwich.
The free ferry service will close from the 6th October whilst the terminals are prepared for two new build ferries. The current three vessels built in Dundee by the Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering Company will be withdrawn. These ferries feature Voith-Schneider propulsion systems for manoeuvrability. A cycloidal propeller is fitted centrally at either end, each driven by a 500bhp 7-cyl Mirrlees National diesel engine.
James Newman was mayor of Woolwich, from 1923 to 1925.
