Burnt - Explored

Another photo from the ridge over-looking Cub Lake.

This hike started from the Cub Lake Trailhead parking lot as the Fern lake trailhead parking lot is closed during the winter. From the Fern Lake trailhead you travel along a stream with Beaver ponds and then through house sized boulders known as "The Arches" until you come to "The Pool". This is where the trail crosses the Big Thompson river. From there you begin to climb and are quickly into the burn zone. There was little snow on the trail, but there were several areas where snow melt had formed ice rivers that covered the trail. Ice spikes were a must on these areas. The hike to Cub Lake is 7.6 miles round trip.

This fire is still not completely extinguished and continues to smolder despite snowfall and colder temperatures. The Forest Canyon area of this fire hadn't burnt in over 800 years and consists of dense areas of trees and plant matter in areas that are difficult to access.
