Malinche tree
This red-flowered tree is a spectacular sight in the Guanacaste region of northwest Costa Rica. It is native to Madagascar, but is now common throughout the tropics, and also grows in Florida and Hawaii. It is known by several names, including Royal Poinciana, Flame Tree, and Gulmohur. One Spanish name is Arbol de Fuego (Tree of Fire). In Costa Rica it is often called the Malinche Tree, named after a beautiful maiden of legend.
The tree is in the pea family, and has large, brown pods.
I took this photo on a hillside - I was higher than the base of the tree, and the branches in the foreground are probably 30 feet above the ground.
