CARDO SELVATICO
Il Cardo mariano o Cardo latteo, nome scientifico Silybum marianum è una pianta molto diffusa in diversi Paesi del Mediterraneo. Appartenente al genere Carduus, famiglia delle Asteraceae, è una pianta erbacea annuale o perenne, mediamente alta, piuttosto spinosa e dai fiori simili al carciofo.
Le radici del cardo hanno proprietà diuretiche, ed a partire dal 1800, questa pianta iniziò ad essere usata anche per le sue qualità antiemorragiche e ipertensive. Particolarmente interessanti sono i frutti che contengono principi disintossicanti e protettivi per il fegato, mentre i capolini di Cardo mariano, vengono utilizzati per la preparazione di ricette della tradizione popolare, alle quali questo ortaggio rustico dona il caratteristico sapore amarognolo, ed è per questo utilizzato anche come ingrediente aromatico nella preparazione di aperitivi e liquori.

WILD THISTLE
Milk thistle, also known as milk thistle, scientifically known as Silybum marianum, is a widespread plant in several Mediterranean countries. Belonging to the Carduus genus, in the Asteraceae family, it is an annual or perennial herbaceous plant, medium-tall, rather thorny, and with artichoke-like flowers.
