L'ABBAZIA CON IL TETTO CHE NON C'E'
In Val di Merse, nel territorio di Chiusdino, sorgono le maestose strutture dell’Abbazia di San Galgano, sede di uno tra i più importanti monasteri toscani eretto dall'ordine Cistercense. Quest’ultimo, istituito nel 1098 a Citeaux (in latino Cistercium) in Francia, con l'intento di riportare alla purezza la regola di San Benedetto, si era diffuso rapidamente in Europa grazie a Bernardo di Chiaravalle. Anche nell’architettura i monaci riflettevano i precetti benedettini, improntati a grande rigore e semplicità delle ornamentazioni, sebbene declinati nella realizzazione di costruzioni spettacolari.
Con l’Abbazia, che si presenta suggestivamente priva delle volte e del tetto, dialoga il vicino e più antico Eremo di Montesiepi, edificato nel luogo dell’eremitaggio di Galgano.

THE ABBEY WITHOUT A ROOF
In the Merse Valley, in the Chiusdino area, stand the majestic structures of the Abbey of San Galgano, home to one of the most important Tuscan monasteries erected by the Cistercian order. Founded in 1098 in Citeaux (Latin: Cistercium), France, with the aim of restoring the purity of the Rule of Saint Benedict, the order quickly spread throughout Europe thanks to Bernard of Clairvaux. Even in their architecture, the monks reflected the Benedictine precepts, characterized by great rigor and simplicity of ornamentation, albeit expressed in the creation of spectacular buildings.
The Abbey, which is evocatively lacking both vaults and a roof, interacts with the nearby and older Hermitage of Montesiepi, built on the site of Galgano's hermitage.
