IL BOSCO VECCHIO DELLA SERENISSIMA
La prima testimonianza scritta nella quale è citato il Bosco d’Alpago (così era allora chiamata la foresta del Cansiglio) è un Diploma del 923 di Berengario I, incoronato Re d’Italia con l’appoggio dell’autorità ecclesiastica, nel quale il sovrano donava la foresta al feudo del Vescovo-Conte di Belluno.
Il Cansiglio rivestì un’enorme importanza economica per lo Stato veneziano: la sua ricca faggeta fu impiegata principalmente nella produzione di remi, legname da opera e carbone. Il governo francese e quello austriaco, succeduti con alterne vicende alla Serenissima, attuarono una gestione disattenta, offrendo occasioni di rivalsa sul patrimonio forestale alle popolazioni contermini finché, dopo la nascita del Regno d’Italia nel 1861, il Governo italiano dichiarò il Cansiglio Foresta Demaniale Inalienabile.

THE OLD FOREST OF THE SERENISSIMA
The first written testimony in which the Bosco d’Alpago (as the Cansiglio forest was then called) is mentioned is a 923 Diploma by Berengario I, crowned King of Italy with the support of the ecclesiastical authority, in which the sovereign donated the forest to the fiefdom of the Bishop-Count of Belluno.
The Cansiglio was of enormous economic importance for the Venetian State: its rich beech forest was mainly used in the production of oars, timber and coal. The French and Austrian governments, which succeeded the Serenissima with alternating fortunes, implemented a careless management, offering opportunities for retaliation on the forest heritage to the neighboring populations until, after the birth of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861, the Italian Government declared the Cansiglio an Inalienable State Forest.
