La caduta delle foglie in autunno non è altro che un meccanismo di difesa: il gelo invernale, infatti, distruggerebbe le cellule delle foglie, facendole marcire e creando danni seri alla pianta. Non solo, la loro caduta permette alla pianta di sopravvivere con una quantità molto inferiore di linfa, permettendo agli alberi di superare l'inverno. Una volte a terra, inoltre, le foglie costituirebbero una sorta di coperta che protegge le radici e il tronco dal freddo e dal gelo.

The falling of leaves in autumn is nothing more than a defense mechanism: the winter frost, in fact, would destroy the cells of the leaves, causing them to rot and creating serious damage to the plant. Not only that, their falling allows the plant to survive with a much smaller amount of sap, allowing the trees to survive the winter. Once on the ground, moreover, the leaves would constitute a sort of blanket that protects the roots and the trunk from the cold and frost.
