Il gabbiano è un uccello che fa parte della famiglia Laridae, ma in realtà sarebbe più giusto parlare di gabbiani perché ne esistono diversi generi e specie. Il genere principale della sottofamiglia Larinae è Larus. Sono volatili di taglia media e li troviamo soprattutto lungo le coste.
Non è tuttavia infrequente trovarli anche lungo corsi d’acqua interni. Inoltre esistono colonie di gabbiani anche in alcune città, ben distanti dal mare.
