Le foglie autunnali svolgnono una funzione termoisolante per le piante stesse dalle quali cadono: le proteggono dal freddo invernale, preservando le radici dal gelo, e costituiscono un rifugio naturale per vari animali selvatici come, ad esempio, il riccio, ma anche lombrichi, farfalle. Molti insetti, inoltre, si nutrono proprio di foglie, aiutando il processo di decomposizione anche di altri microorganismi.

The leaves that fall from the trees in autumn are precious for the plant and animal ecosystem. They should therefore not be removed from parks and gardens, but rather set aside at the edges of the roads. A city in the Netherlands has urged those who take care of greenery in the city not to use blowers to sweep them away.
Autumn leaves perform a heat-insulating function for the plants themselves from which they fall: they protect them from the winter cold, preserving the roots from frost, and constitute a natural refuge for various wild animals such as, for example, the hedgehog, but also earthworms and butterflies. Furthermore, many insects feed on leaves, helping the decomposition process of other microorganisms as well.
