IL PALAZZO DEI DIAMANTI
Prendendo a modello il ben più noto Palazzo dei Diamanti di Ferrara, costruito tra il 1493 e il 1503 per il duca Sigismondo d’Este, secondo il progetto dell’architetto Biagio Rossetti, quasi 30 anni dopo (nel 1535 circa), a Macerata, fu eretto un edificio dalla struttura simile come dimora della ricca famiglia Mozzi.
Come a Ferrara, il nome del palazzo deriva dalla decorazione della facciata esterna col “bugnato” a forma di punte di diamante. La tecnica del “bugnato” per la facciata degli edifici, era famosa e usata già nel periodo romano e serviva per l’isolamento dei piani inferiori contro i rumori e la polvere delle strade della città; durante il Rinascimento però, questo stile prese un significato puramente estetico.

THE PALACE OF DIAMONDS
Taking as a model the well-known Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara, built between 1493 and 1503 for Duke Sigismondo d'Este, according to the project of the architect Biagio Rossetti, almost 30 years later (in about 1535), in Macerata, a building with a similar structure was erected as the home of the wealthy Mozzi family.
As in Ferrara, the name of the building derives from the decoration of the external facade with the diamond-shaped ashlar. The "bugnato" technique for the facade of buildings was famous and used already in the Roman period and was used to insulate the lower floors against the noise and dust of the city streets; during the Renaissance however, this style took on a purely aesthetic meaning.
