LA CRIPTA DELLE MUMMIE.
La Cappella sorge in posizione isolata di fronte al Duomo di S. Andrea. E’ una piccola costruzione circolare in sassi squadrati poggiata su una cripta seminterrata. L’edificio risale alla metà del XIII sec. e probabilmente fu usato in origine come battistero. Distrutto anch’esso dal terremoto del 1976, è stato ricostruito per intero e restaurato con ricomposizione per anastilosi d’alcune parti architettoniche. Fin dal 1842 la cappella venne adibita a “museo delle mummie”.
La storia delle mummie è interessante e risale al 1647 quando, nello spostamento di un sarcofago trecentesco attribuito ad un membro della famiglia degli Scaligeri per la costruzione della Cappella del Rosario nel Duomo, venne alla luce la prima mummia, detta, per le sue fattezze fisiche, “il gobbo“.
Questo fenomeno, nel corso dei secoli, ha interessato parecchi corpi ivi sepolti. Tra il 1825 ed il 1891 furono estratte una quarantina di mummie, parte delle quali furono portate al Gabinetto Universitario di Padova, al Museo di Vienna e nella chiesa degli Invalidi a Parigi.

THE CRYPT OF THE MUMMIES.
The Chapel stands in an isolated position in front of the Cathedral of S. Andrea. It is a small circular building in square stones resting on a basement crypt. The building dates back to the mid-thirteenth century. and it was probably originally used as a baptistery. Also destroyed by the 1976 earthquake, it was completely rebuilt and restored with reassembly due to anastylosis of some architectural parts. Since 1842 the chapel was used as a "museum of mummies".
The history of the mummies is interesting and dates back to 1647 when, in the movement of a fourteenth-century sarcophagus attributed to a member of the Scaligeri family for the construction of the Rosary Chapel in the Cathedral, the first mummy, called, due to its physical features, came to light. , "The hunchback".
This phenomenon, over the centuries, has affected several bodies buried there. Between 1825 and 1891 some forty mummies were extracted, some of which were taken to the University Cabinet of Padua, the Museum of Vienna and the church of the Invalides in Paris.
