BIBIONE. CANALE LUGUGNANA
LA BONIFICA PRIMA DEL TURISMO
La storia recente di Bibione è stata scritta grazie alle grandi opere di bonifica dei terreni dal mare all’entroterra per tutto il territorio del Comune di San Michele al Tagliamento intorno agli inizi del ‘900.
Il suolo di questa terra era ricoperto di vaste boscaglie e altre di palude o laguna. L’opera di bonifica iniziò nel 1904 per deliberazione unanime di alcuni volenterosi per redimere la zona dalla malaria e restituirla alla popolazione.
Nel 1905 si costituì il Consorzio di “Bonifica dei terreni tra la destra del Tagliamento ed il canale Lugugnana” e più tardi cambiò il nome con “Consorzio di Bonifica di San Michele al Tagliamento”. Iniziarono così i lavori di canalizzazione con l'innalzamento degli argini, la sistemazione dei fossi e delle strade di campagna e si incanalarono le acque a ridosso dell’entroterra.
Fu un lavoro molto grande che ha suddiviso il territorio in 7 bacini e ha consentito il risanamento di una vastissima superficie, resa fertile e produttiva per l’agricoltura. Nel 1930 il bacino di Bibione venne prosciugato definitivamente. Tra la sabbia, i pini e la bellezza della natura, nasce l’amata località di Bibione.
Lo sviluppo turistico prese il via intorno al 1950 raggiungendo in poco tempo grandi progressi.

RECLAMATION WORKS BEFORE TOURISM
The recent history of Bibione was written thanks to the great land reclamation works from the sea to the hinterland throughout the territory of the Municipality of San Michele al Tagliamento around the early 1900s.
The soil of this land was covered with vast scrublands and others with swamp or lagoon. The reclamation work began in 1904 by unanimous decision of some willing to redeem the area from malaria and return it to the population.
In 1905 the “Land reclamation consortium between the right of the Tagliamento and the Lugugnana canal” was formed and later changed its name to the “San Michele al Tagliamento reclamation consortium”. Thus began the canalization works with the raising of the embankments, the arrangement of ditches and country roads and the waters were channeled close to the hinterland.
It was a very large work that divided the territory into 7 basins and allowed the rehabilitation of a very large area, made fertile and productive for agriculture. In 1930 the Bibione basin was definitively drained. Between the sand, the pines and the beauty of nature, the beloved town of Bibione is born.
The tourist development started around 1950 reaching great progress in a short time.
