Il centro storico di Klagenfurt è di dimensioni piuttosto raccolte, quindi è facilmente visitabile anche a piedi senza la necessità di prendere mezzi pubblici. In qualche ora si possono apprezzare le sue maggiori attrazioni, e in nemmeno un’ora scarsa si potrebbe passeggiare per tutto il suo centro storico.
La città di Klagenfurt attuale rinasce come una fenice dopo un disastroso incendio che distrusse la città nel 1514 e l’impianto urbanistico ricalca in gran parte il progetto dell’architetto comasco Domenico dell’Allio, che volle racchiudere la città in una cinta muraria (successivamente abbattuta all’arrivo dei francesi di Napoleone) e ideò la Neuer Platz, la grande piazza – più simile ad una piazza d’armi che ad un centro di incontro – attorno cui si sarebbe svolta la vita della città.

The historic center of Klagenfurt is rather small in size, so it can be easily visited on foot without the need to take public transport. In a few hours you can appreciate its major attractions, and in not even a scarce hour you could stroll through its entire historic center.
The current city of Klagenfurt is reborn like a phoenix after a disastrous fire that destroyed the city in 1514 and the urban plan largely follows the project of the Como-born architect Domenico dell'Allio, who wanted to enclose the city in a wall (later demolished at the arrival of Napoleon's French) and conceived the Neuer Platz, the large square - more like a parade ground than a meeting center - around which the life of the city would take place.
