ZUGLIO. PIEVE DI SAN PIETRO

La Pieve Matrice di San Pietro a Zuglio, in Carnia, è una chiesa antichissima la cui storia è segnata dalle vicissitudini del luogo. L'antica Iulium Carnicum fu la città romana più settentrionale d'Italia e, situata strategicamente in prossimità della grande arteria stradale che da Aquileia portava ad Aguntum (centro del Norico meridionale), fu raggiunta ben presto dalle correnti evangelizzatrici partite da Aquileia.
La chiesa gotica attualmente esistente, fu voluta nel 1312 dal Patriarca di Aquileia, che la fece costruire con un'unica navata e tre altari, conservando la sagrestia precedente e incorporando la precedente parete settentrionale con le finestre romaniche, che tuttora si possono vedere.
Nei secoli a seguire vennero fatte numerose modifiche ad opera di diversi maestri (quali ad esempio il Maistro Honz Stau Melz de Bolzan) dando vita ad un complesso asimmetrico molto interessante dal punto di vista architettonico.

The Parish Church of San Pietro a Zuglio, in Carnia, is an ancient church whose history is marked by the vicissitudes of the place. The ancient Iulium Carnicum was the northernmost Roman city in Italy and, strategically located near the great road that led from Aquileia to Aguntum (center of southern Noricum), it was soon reached by the evangelizing currents starting from Aquileia.
The currently existing Gothic church was commissioned in 1312 by the Patriarch of Aquileia, who had it built with a single nave and three altars, preserving the previous sacristy and incorporating the previous northern wall with Romanesque windows, which can still be seen today.
In the following centuries numerous modifications were made by different masters (such as the Maistro Honz Stau Melz de Bolzan) giving life to an asymmetrical complex that is very interesting from an architectural point of view.
