Il cormorano è un uccello elegante e raffinato.
Il suo corpo è lungo e affusolato, il collo è a forma di “S” ed il becco è ad uncino. La sua piccola sacca gulare è simile a quella dei pellicani. È uno dei pochi uccelli in grado di muovere gli occhi e riesce ad immergersi fino ad una profondità di 9 metri. Vive sia in acque dolci che salate ed i suoi occhi sono dotati di una terza palpebra che funge da maschera subacquea. Sott’acqua si sposta agilmente anche grazie alle zampe arretrate e munite di larghissime membrane interdigitali. Non si tuffa in volo, ma si immerge con delicatezza aiutato dalle ampie ali. Le sue immersioni non durano però più di un minuto perché il suo piumaggio è poco impermeabile. Dopo aver pescato, l’uccello è costretto a effettuare lunghe soste con le ali ben spiegate per far asciugare penne e piume.

The cormorant is an elegant and refined bird.
Its body is long and tapered, the neck is S-shaped and the beak is hooked. Its small gular pouch is similar to that of pelicans. It is one of the few birds able to move its eyes and can dive to a depth of 9 meters. It lives in both fresh and salt waters and its eyes are equipped with a third eyelid that acts as an underwater mask. Underwater it moves easily thanks to its rear legs and equipped with very wide interdigital membranes. It does not dive in flight, but dives with delicacy aided by the wide wings. However, its dives do not last more than a minute because its plumage is not very waterproof. After fishing, the bird is forced to make long stops with the wings well spread to let the feathers and feathers dry.
