LA CRIPTA ALLAGATA.
La basilica fu eretta poco dopo la metà del V secolo dal Vescovo Neone, che la dedicò ai SS. Apostoli. I muri originali non esistono più, perché la chiesa è stata completamente rifatta nel X-XI secolo.
Nel 1261 la chiesa fu affidata ai Frati Conventuali, e da allora prese il nome attuale. In essa, nel 1321, si svolsero i funerali di Dante, che venne sepolto nei pressi della chiesa.
Visibile attraverso alcune aperture, la cripta è costantemente invasa dalle acque;il fenomeno è dovuto al fatto che la cripta è sotto il livello del mare e le infiltrazioni nei secoli hanno consentito a far entrare l'acqua. Il suo pavimento è costituito da quello dell'antica costruzione del V secolo, tanto che vi si intravedono dei resti musivi, fra cui uno che reca un'iscrizione latina sulla sepoltura del fondatore, il Vescovo Neone.

THE FLOODED CRYPT.
The basilica was built shortly after the mid-5th century by Bishop Neon, who dedicated it to the Holy Apostles. The original walls no longer exist, as the church was completely rebuilt in the 10th-11th centuries.
In 1261, the church was entrusted to the Conventual Friars, and from then on it took its current name. In 1321, Dante's funeral was held there, and he was buried near the church.
Visible through several openings, the crypt is constantly flooded; this phenomenon is due to the fact that it is below sea level and seepage over the centuries has allowed water to enter. Its floor is made from that of the ancient 5th-century building, so much so that some mosaic remains can be seen, including one bearing a Latin inscription on the tomb of the founder, Bishop Neon.
