A glimpse of the past.

A view of Middleport Pottery, the home of Burgess and Leigh and their Burleighware, from the towpath of the Trent and Mersey canal in Middleport, Stoke-on-Trent.

Built in 1888-89, this Victorian potbank still produces ware today.

The structure to the far right belonged to Anderton and Mersey Weaver Company who used to operate as cargo shippers up and down the canal, this dates back to 1890.

Both Middleport Pottery and the bottle kiln, which can be seen to the left, have grade II* listed status.

The Trent and Mersey canal was commissioned to allow the trade in raw materials and, subsequently, finished goods to and from their manufacture to markets elsewhere in the country and beyond to export markets. Prior to its construction pottery was transported on rough roads and tracks by pack animals and carts with the potential damage associated with such haulage.
