Tiger Woods Impressed by McIlroy

During a press conference today at the home of the AT&T National this week, Tiger Woods fielded a few questions in regard to his knee, his future playing on the PGA TOUR in 2011, and to talk about his event at Aronimink Golf Club at Newton Square, PA.

Tiger opened with an acknowledgement that his knee and Achilles tendon are still healing, and that he has not hit any golf balls other than putting since withdrawing from The Players Championship. Woods also admitted for the first time that playing in the Players was perhaps the wrong decision, even adding that he would be playing had he not tried The Players, where he hurt himself after making an awkward swing during his first round.

Perhaps even more interesting was how Woods fielded questions pertaining to the performance of Rory McIlroy at this year's US Open, which Tiger watched intently. Woods acknowledged that the performance "was impressive" and "seriously good playing".

Woods was then asked about his reaction to friend Mark O'Meara's comments regarding McIlroy's swing and how much better it was in comparison to a 21-year old Woods in the past.

"I totally agree with what Mark said. In 1997 when I was 21, granted I had some success, but I didn't like my swing. That's why I changed it. [McIlroy's] swing is definitely better than mine was at the same age. At the same age - comparatively - his swing is definitely better. He needs to continue working on it to get better, but Rory's only 22. It is fun to see someone at that age doing what he is doing."
