82. John Hejduk + Coin-operated Toy Rides + Camera Lending Machines

atelier ying, nyc

With the recent expansion of Manhattan into a bike-friendly city offering rentable bicycles to the public, this design proposal offers a new streamlined way of accessing the city and brings children into the picture as well as those who walk instead of riding bicycles (aka street photographers).

Chinatown would be the starting point.

Each coin-operated toy rides are a way of extending the ubiquitous asian game arcade out into the street. In this homage each toy ride becomes a kiosk with a random mix of rental cameras of varying vintage as well as quality available for a nominal fee and to be returned at any kiosk within a specified radius of the location making this network (evoking the famous secret tunnels of yesteryear Chinatown) to be as a gigantic vending machine where you'll never know what's available on your block or around the corner, an instamatic or an M4-P. This may also reduce the need for bulky camera bags as well.

The circular antique horse racing game motif for the radial distribution of kiosks within the city is recalled as a homage of vernacular architecture to the poet-architect John Hejduk.

My "Keri Map" Camera also has its first appearance here. Both devices now offer street photographers diverse yet 'site-specific' ways to document the streets.
