25. Shohei Imamura: The Pornographers

atelier ying, Nyc

The above are my sketch notes for a camera design in homage to the director Shohei Imamura (continuing a series from the director Ozu). Personally my favorite image is that of my notes, not my finished drawings, because it is here that the ideas have so much potentiality to me, I love the feel of soft lead for laying in the outer shape lines and then hard lead for the details. I know everyone uses auto-cad now from idea to final drawing but the slow movement of the lead pencil is hypnotic. If you ask me where the art is, I would say the art is in the rough notes, rather than in the final cleaned up drawing. It communicates more, but makes less of a statement and does not transform others like a 3-D object.

More on Shohei Imamura in my final drawing of this camera.

P.S.:: After long deliberation, I'm going with Flickr for organizing my work and possibly i may add myself to Tumbler. It's ironic for a person who loves intimate, tiny spaces and writing to eschew the highly personal blog space for a community that is primarily for serious photography so perhaps I'm on the margins of the Flickr world. But when I draw, the camera world, the street and the photographers I look up to are in my mind.
