Design No. 308 Franz Schubert: a Tram for Platonic Love
atelier ying, nyc.
A mobile retreat space, designed for Schubertiades, commemorates the unrequited love between the composer and the Countess Karoline Esterhazy.
An ivory & gold fountain is at the bottom of the three level tram for a never-ending flow for tiny glasses of wine. A fortepiano is at the far end of the tram interior with a velvet-lined wood holder for fresh manuscript paper.
The ground level has bars to lean against and the small circle of admirers stand around while the balcony level has seating which gives its occupants a performer's view of the scene from the stage. The top level is reserved for students with music score stands and the best acoustics as well as low rails so the students can lean to enjoy the view below. Both upper levels enjoy the music indirectly although the tram interior has a near perfect shoebox space. The idealism of a performer's view from the stage and the high level of comfort at the top level seeks to give more intimate musical experiences for the Schubertiade.
