Design No. 314: James Bond: Motel Camera Set, for Walter Zapp
Atelier Ying, NYC
In Chapter 16 of Fleming's novel Live And Let Die, a small description of a Tampa motel that bond retreats to after a titanic battle with poisonous fish and sharks is commemorated here as a hospitality kit for the agent.
The Minox spy camera by Walter Zapp (an autodidact) slides into a central tube underneath a rooftop hotel pool for this fantasy camera that is similar to a Cold War Russian briefcase spy camera. In designing this kit, I flipped the location of a traditional film winder to the top, converting it to a hotel rooftop pool with a white gate. A silver tray recessed with two glasses, for Old Grandad Bourbon on the rocks according to the novel, is inset as a fictive swimming pool. The glasses also refer to the iconic twins lens reflex camera look as a reminder of the photography motif for this design. A thin side drawer slides out to hold a blue leather notepad and matching blue Parker fountain pen. Three large interval viewers allow the user to reminisce upon a recreation of a blue and white motel room interior at the bottom compartment, where Bond writes his report to M about Mr. Big's operations before heading back to Jamaica.
Please see my other designs in my James Bond album.
