225. Waddingtons WWII Monopoly Writing Desk

atelier ying, nyc.

David Linley, the nephew of Queen Elizabeth II, is a classical furniture designer and maker. My design here is inspired by his work and is dedicated to him.

During World War II, the Waddington's company had an esteemed role to play, that of supplying Allied British POW's with a escape kits fashioned inside of a classic Monopoly board game sets.

My writing table is a one off design piece with representations of English cottage houses that are part of the Monopoly game logo. The one on the left is a cigar humidor. The other on the right houses a mini bar for one, and has a lighted display shelf for a collection of miniature Monopoly game tokens from the 1930s and 40s. Instead of drawers, the tabletop folds down revealing a world map with soft LED lights indicating historic locations of POW camps. The main writing surface has secret compartments housing a list of items (detailed on my drawing) recalling the secret items embedded inside the Monopoly game board by Waddington's craftsmen (who were honored publicly in 2007) for prisoners to use as escape tools. Lastly, a gallery of compartments hold notebook papers and assorted real money, as was used in the board game.
