153. Felix Nadar: "Le Geant" Maiden Voyage

atelier ying, nyc.

I'm fascinated by the adventures of the pioneer aerial photographer Nadar onboard his hot air balloon, "Le Geant", and in particular his tenacity which shows up in the design for the of Gondola for this hot air balloon.

The fact that his first two voyages were failures; the second one descending to the ground and dragging its gondola hundreds of feet across the fields of the countryside, inspired my associations for this design of K-rations for these ancestors of modern day airborne troops.

Oddly, it could be said that Nadar tried to achieve his means by land and by air, like a "bump and run" shot in golf, the most effective weapon in high winds on the golf course.

Drawing from the worlds of Air Force rations and links-styled golf, I propose the very portable set shown (Proceeding clockwise from the top):

1. the gondola of Le Geant is transformed to a Bellows-styled rangefinder camera that is semiautomatic. On the terrace of this "flying cottage" is a set of dials reminiscent of the famous Nikon 35 TI. The lens is behind the main door which extends by virtue of a ladder. A side crank operates the bellows for focusing.

2. The K rations box has an entire round of French livarot cheese, which was a favorite of the Emperor Napoleon the third who was in attendance for the second voyage. The box also contains a cheese knife, Violet flavored chewing gum, matches, a cigar, a divot tool, a box of wooden tees, uneeda hard biscuits (a staple of Weegee's diet), some pain relief medicine, air crew ration box of licorice and a trio of seasonings, the most unusual being a tiny vial of truffle oil with garlic and dehydrated onion, enough to transform the cheese, any fresh loaf of bread and local wine into a heavenly meal.

3. a pewter golf flask with the logo of Le Geant.

4. Dr. Eckener's binoculars (Legendary captain of the Hindenburg).
