151. The Masters at Augusta

atelier ying, nyc.

The chairman of the Augusta National, Clifford Roberts was a complicated man whose life's end was tragic with his suicide on the grounds of the Augusta course. His famed quotation was "As long as I'm still alive, all the golfers will be white and all the caddies will be black".

His racial views were wrong, looking back now from a modern perspective.

In this design, Roberts is presented with an accessory for the famed Augusta Masters green jacket. It is a kind of compass, but for the emotional and sentimental world.

A green Masters wristwatch will have 3 special functions:

1. It is an atomizer that dispenses homeopathic remedies to help improve its owner's mental state, leading him slowly toward clarity, openness, awareness and ultimately to change the way he views life, and his fellow man.

The openings are arranged in the likeness of a Celtic cross.

I came upon this part of my design via two ideas: the numerous meticulously groomed flower beds of which the Augusta golf course is famous for, and the homeopathic remedies of Dr. Edward Bach. In this respect the cure for Clifford Roberts actually lay on his golf course.

2. A relic locket with a Victorian miniature portrait of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann the founder of homeopathy. This wrist watch face opens here like a pocket watch to reveal this compartment with a tiny hair relics of Samuel Hahnemann's and Edward Bach.

3. The tradition of the green jacket for the winner of the Masters tournament originally meant that the waiters knew who to give the bill to for the Masters celebratory parties, to the man wearing the green jacket. Following that tradition, this wrist watch contains a gold sovereign inside a hidden compartment that you must open with a tiny screwdriver. The collectible coin can handle almost any Master's event even paying for the expensive wines served.

Finally, on the watch face is a silhouette of the majestic 12th hole at Augusta. This most difficult hole of the course is a reminder of life's surmountable difficulties.
