St Peter's, Lowick - 2

St Peter's church in Lowick, Northants, photographed on 28 November 2024. This church is included in Simon Jenkins' book "England's Thousand Best Churches", and Jenkins says about this monument to Ralph Greene, who died in 1417, and his wife: "This is one of the finest alabaster tombs in England. The effigy dates from the creative burst in English art at the turn of the 15th century and is the only one in existence for which a contract survives. This is from Greene's wife to two Derbyshire carvers named Thomas Prentys and Robert Sutton, for a 'counterfeit of an esquire all armed for battle'. The pair lie in effigy with tiny lierne-vaulted canopies above their heads. Her headdress and coat illustrate the wilder shores of contemporary fashion. He wears chainmail and armour but has removed his gauntlet to hold his wife's hand in death. The work is stiff yet moving."
