The Board of Governors is investigating the death of Florida A&M University drum major Robert Champion due to the possibility that his death was the result of hazing by FAMU band members. The FAMU Board of Trustees, in an effort to "control" what it sees as merely a public relations problem (rather than focusing on the real tragedy, the death of one of its own students), has attempted to create momentum to blame FAMU President Ammons for Champion's death. While the board's end game is unclear, the initial steps are thoroughly transparent: By publicly reprimanding Dr. Ammons for some nebulous charge of failing to "do more" following the tragedy, they get the ball rolling for general public outrage targeted at Dr. Ammons. The board, led by trustee Rufus Montgomery, is hiding the real problem, the possible hazing death of Robert Champion, by simply trying to blame the otherwise blameless Dr. Ammons.

Frankly, it appears that Dr. Ammons had been attempting to prevent this type of hazing before the incident occurred in the first place. Rules were in force and effect prior to Champion's death that forbade hazing and hazing-like behavior, of which the FAMU band members were aware.

But the trustees board isn't focusing on the efforts to curb this behavior — they are simply attempting to find Dr. Ammons guilty of failing to adequately prevent the public relations fallout from the incident. In fact, Montgomery was quoted as saying at a recent board meeting: "The Board of Governors stepped in to do our job (public relations management)..."

Furthermore, at the same meeting, the trustees agreed to hire a public relations firm to control what it saw as flak it was receiving from the media. This is shocking callousness by the board of a grievous circumstance. Rather than spending time and money on public relations firms and reprimanding Dr. Ammons, the board should take its cue from Dr. Ammons and focus on addressing the culture-level changes that need to take place to prevent this type of hazing from ever occurring in the first place.
