Attempted Murder in Niagara Falls, New York

This is Pat aka "Pyrexx". I've known him personally since the 6th grade. On April 29th, 2016 he was stabbed 6 times in the chest and stomach by a 28 year old man named Lawrence Smith. The stabbing happened at this exact location near the intersection of 17th Street and Lasalle Avenue in Niagara Falls, New York. This was on scene of an interview by a television show from Montréal called "A vos risques et périls" which translated to English means "At Your Own Peril". The show travels across the United States and goes to its roughest neighborhoods and interviews local residents about their experiences growing up there. Its hosted by a man named Hugo Girard who won the World Strongman Competition in 2002. During the interview Pat explained that he had known the attacker for years and never thought he would ever have stabbed him. The attacker was drunk, got angry over a verbal back and forth, pulled out a knife and began stabbing Pat. Pat said as it was happening he couldn't believe it was really happening, he said "I can remember thinking are you serious? This is how I'm going to go out? Like this? All I could think about were my kids. I just kept thinking about my kids, the entire scene was chaos. I actually remember seeing the white light, I saw it twice. It was brighter than anything I've ever seen, almost like being a completely white room, almost florescent. Then I snapped back into reality. There was blood everywhere. The EMT's showed up and cut all my clothes off and took me to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center but my wounds were so bad they had to ship me to ECMC (Erie County Medical Center)" It is important to note that ECMC is the only hospital in all of Western New York State that has a trauma unit. Niagara Falls does not have a hospital with a trauma unit so when people are shot and stabbed here they have to go to Buffalo, NY for treatment. Its about 30 minutes away from Niagara Falls. Pat's attacker was arrested on May 3rd, 2016 at the Welfare building at the Niagara County Department of Social Services in downtown Niagara Falls. Lawrence Smith had already served prison time for a previous stabbing many years prior. After being arrested a police source told me he defecated on the floor, and covered himself in his own feces inside of his jail cell. He is facing a 1st degree assault charge. During the show they interviewed me as well and I explained how as of June 2016, Niagara Falls NY is listed as the 38th most dangerous city in America, out of 17,000 cities and towns across America. This is due to our violent crime rate, which includes aggravated assault. When the FBI compiles crime statistics they don't have a category for "Attempted Murder" so they include actual attempted murders, like this one, as "aggravated assaults" so on paper it sounds like its just someone who got beat up when its actually way more severe. While we only have about 3 to 5 murders a year we have about 350 to 420 assaults a year, and often that includes aggravated assaults or attempted murders such as this incident in particular. We have a rate of about 650 to 830 assaults per 100,000 people, these stats have put us at 6 cities more dangerous than Compton California for 2016. It is also important to note that Pat has never been involved in street or criminal activities. This was an actual case of an innocent person becoming a victim of violence in Niagara Falls. Many locals try to lie or refuse to believe its impossible for innocent victims to be victimized in Niagara Falls. They assume everyone is a criminal and "deserves" this kind of treatment when that's simply not the case. During the interview Pat was asked if he learned anything from this incident and he said "Yes it taught me to always be aware of my surroundings at all times, and to not take life for granted." He has been in high spirits since his recovery. The TV show and interview will be airing after January. Niagara Falls, New York June 6th, 2016.
