Evening Flight

Ducks in the Missouri Ozarks

My daughter-in-law wrote a poem inspired by this photo:

Evening flight

fly away, all things, against the patch and blur

through stitch and fray of night and day

fly away, like a flock of flying birds.

fly away, you screens and scenes and signs and every weary word

with the buzz and its refrain

fly away, all things, against the patch and blur.

fly away, you grinding toils and cares with hearts all stooped and curved

mailman, take the mail again

fly away, like a flock of flying birds

fly away regret, with deeds undone and songs unsung, unheard

take the beauty and the blame

fly away, all things, against the patch and blur.

fly away all consciousness, with all your hum and whirr

electric youth, electric brain

fly away, like a flock of flying birds

fly away, all anguish, every sorrow, every ache and burn

take the toil, the strain, mundane

fly away, all things, against the patch and blur--

fly away, like a flock of flying birds.
